What to Expect When Getting Veneers
If you’ve taken the plunge and decided to go for veneers, you’re probably wondering what’s going to happen during the appointment. Will it be painful? Will your teeth hurt after the procedure? Will your smile stay white and bright forever? The best person to ask if your dentist, who will answer all of your questions and discuss the pros and cons of veneers. The step-by-step account below can also help:
It usually takes multiple trips to our Lincroft dental clinic for the consultation, evaluation, and veneer application. The time can extend if you are getting veneers for several teeth, although many teeth can be treated at once.
The consultation is a friendly, no-pressure conversation between you and your dentist. You’re going to discuss what you want to achieve with your smile, dental treatments that you’ve had in the past (if any), and your medical and dental history. Your dentist will check your teeth (may include X-rays and teeth impressions for better evaluation) and determine the best way to improve your smile.
Teeth whitening may be ideal for some patients, while others may need multiple procedures if they have tooth decay, missing teeth, and gum disease. Veneers can be applied only to healthy teeth, and primary problems must be treated first. Dr. Friedman will let you know if you need additional treatments.
On your second appointment, your dentist will prepare the tooth by removing a bit of enamel from the tooth’s surface. This is often done under local anesthesia. Your dentist will take impressions of the tooth and send them to the lab that will create the veneer. It takes a week or more for the veneers to be made, so you’ll likely receive a temporary covering for your tooth.
The veneer is tested for fit and color before being bonded to the tooth. If everything is perfect, Dr. Lincroft will clean and roughen the tooth’s surface to make the cement bond strongly. Finally, the veneer is applied, hardened, polished, and adjusted.
