How To Get Ready For Your Oral Dental Surgery

Oral dental surgery is routine, and in the hands of an expert dentist like Dr. Friedman, safe and effective. It can relieve dental problems that otherwise will continue to cause you pain and discomfort. That’s why you need to call Lincroft’s best oral surgeon today at 732-352-3903 and schedule a consultation.

Reasons You Might Need Oral Surgery

Oral surgery is not something Dr. Friedman takes lightly. Whenever possible, you’ll receive a non-surgical fix. For example, most cavities can be repaired with fillings or dental crowns. If those cavities get too big, neither will work and the tooth must be removed with oral surgery.
Other situations where you might need oral surgery include:

  • You have an infection inside a tooth causing a bad toothache.
  • A tooth is too damaged and needs to come out.
  • You are replacing a missing tooth with a dental implant.
  • A wisdom tooth is impacted and must be removed.

By calling Newman Springs Dental Care, you can schedule an appointment to see if oral surgery is necessary. Dr. Friedman holds a Fellowship with the Academy of General Dentistry. This means he has over 500 hours of continuing education in addition to his Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) degree. In fact, he has 300% more training that New Jersey requires of dentists. You’ll be in good hands with Dr. Friedman.

How To Get Ready For Your Oral Surgery Procedure

If you need oral surgery, here are a few tips that can help your visit go more smoothly.

Lay out some comfortable clothes for the day of your oral dental surgery appointment.

During your oral surgery procedure, you’ll be lying back in one of our comfortable chairs for a while. You want to wear something comfortable and simple to help your visit feel better. There’s certainly no need to dress nicely for this! Instead, lay out some clothes the night before that you can relax in.

Don’t bother with makeup or jewelry.

Along the same lines, you don’t need to wear any makeup on the day of your oral dental surgery. Anything like that will just rub off on our team as they help. Likewise, take out any earrings or piercings and take off necklaces. Any jewelry on or near your head could interfere with Dr. Friedman.

Make sure you understand all your pre-op instructions from Dr. Friedman.

After your initial consultation, you’ll likely get a list of instructions for pre-op (a.k.a. before your surgery). Don’t wait until the day of your appointment to read them! Instead, go over them carefully and make sure they all make sense. If you have any questions, do not hesitate to call us at 732-352-3903.

Don’t eat or drink anything but water starting eight hours before your appointment.

While this depends somewhat on the anesthesia that’s going to be used, you’ll probably have to go without food or drinks for eight hours before your appointment. You can always drink water and take any medication as normal.

How To Get Ready For After Your Oral Surgery Procedure

Dr. Friedman is well-trained and experienced in solving dental problems with oral surgery. That means your recovery time will be as short as possible. That said, you will probably need a day or more to rest and recover. Here are some tips for making that after-surgery time more enjoyable.

Make sure you have some cold packs in the freezer.

Pain medication will be prescribed as needed, but a cold pack is an effective, safe, and cost-effective way to control pain. Get some cold packs ready by placing them in the freezer the night before your visit. Then place them on your cheek or jaw as needed.

Get some bland, soft foods to eat.

Spicy and chewy foods are exactly what your mouth does NOT need after oral surgery. Stock up on mashed potatoes, soup, yogurt, and other foods that are soft and bland. You’ll need to eat to keep up your strength.

Line up some books, movies, or shows to enjoy.

If you’re going to be resting for a day or more, you need something to stop getting bored. Don’t wait until you get home after oral surgery to figure out how to spend that time. Line up some books, TV shows on Netflix, movies, and so on to have something to do.

Make sure you understand all your post-op instructions.

As with your pre-op instructions, read your post-op (or after surgery) instructions and make sure all of them make sense to you. If not, contact our Lincroft, NJ dental office and ask us any questions.
